Mahlon Dean Johnson

Mahlon Dean Johnson "Dean" was born December 12, 1926 in a blinding snow storm at his home in Barnwell Alberta Canada to Leith and Myrtle Johnson. He returned with honor to his Heavenly Father at his home on August 7, 2013. He leaves behind his beloved wife Betty, children Pam McMurdie, Joni Page (Ken), Eric Johnson (Belinda) and Jennifer Steed (Greg). He loved his 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gayle, Wayne and Byron, and sisters Beth and Julie. He is survived by sisters Zola, Letha, Jackie, Peggy and Rita.

He spent his first 18 years on the family farm in Barnwell prior to studying at BYU. Upon graduation, he earned a Masters Degree in Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin where he met the love of his life, Betty. He joined the Air Force in 1952, graduating from Officers Training school in Biloxi MS, where he and Betty were married. Their union was later solemnized in the Cardston Temple. Dean was a faithful High Priest, Home Teacher and Ward Clerk. He loved serving in the temple.

Dean spent 26 years serving in the US Air Force, traveling to Germany, South Carolina, Ohio, Japan, Vietnam, Utah and Montana. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired in Kaysville where he and Betty have spent their time enjoying BYU football and Jazz games, but mostly their family. Dean was a proud member of the Thundering Herd.

Other pastimes included his DVD collection, watching war movies and compiling photo albums. He wrote a priceless autobiography and a biography of his parents. He loved sports, coached volleyball, and played basketball.

Dean was a great example to everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Crestwood Ward, 1039 E. Crestwood Rd. Friends may visit with family Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main and at the church Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
