Marcelle Quayle Payne
November 15, 1923 ~ July 9, 2014
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 9, 2014, Marcelle Quayle Payne, 90, passed away peacefully at the Washington Terrace Care Center following a stroke.
She was born November 15, 1923 in Logan, Utah to John Thorpe and Mary Lamb Quayle. She was educated in the Logan City Schools and graduated from Logan High School in 1942.
Soon after graduation she moved to Ogden and went to work at Hill Air Force Base as a Clerk Typist. In 1957, she transferred as a Card Punch Operator in Data Processing to the IRS Western Service Center, when it opened its offices in Ogden; she later became a supervisor in that department.
In July 1942, Marcelle met her husband, Thomas Roland Payne; they worked together in the same office at Hill Field. They dated until January 1943 when he joined the US Navy. On September 20, 1943, while he was on leave, they were married in Long Beach, California. They were blessed with two sons and their marriage was solemnized as an eternal family in the Ogden LDS Temple on July 23, 1974. Tommy preceded her in death on February 10, 1991.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in the Primary, Sunday school and Relief Society. She had a great love for children, especially those with special needs. She volunteered as a teacher’s aide at Canyon View School in Ogden, while her son, Jeff, attended school there. She was a member of the Ogden Altrusa Club and Prader-Willi Association.
To Marcelle, her family was very important. She enjoyed being with them on vacations at family dinners, parties, and gatherings. She liked to go golfing with her husband and friends. She loved sleepovers with her grandchildren, which usually meant pizza, watching movies, popcorn, treats, Atari games, and making cookies. Going shopping with Grandma was always fun with lunch together afterwards. She liked to crochet and she was a good cook; fried chicken, Swiss steak, chocolate “turtle’ cookies, and the best penuche and fudge. You always received a warm welcome and greeting as you entered her home. She had a sweet little giggle and laugh, and a spunky personality. She was loving, caring, kind, and took a genuine interest in people. She quickly made friends wherever she went. She had the ability to accept whatever life handed her and would make the best of it.
Marcelle is survived by her son, Lynn T. (Lynda) Payne; five grandchildren, Kelly (Jennifer) Payne, Christopher (Kimberly) Payne, Nathan (Risha) Payne, Tracie (Eva) Pututau, Amanda (Ryan) Parent; 13 great-grandchildren, Mayra, Addie, Kaleb, Tyler, Carter, Katelynn, Emma, Jacob, Isaac, Logan, Tyson, Jaeger and Gabe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Jeffrey John Payne, her parents, two sisters, Emma Quayle Ralph, Joyce Quayle Winger, and one brother, John “Jack” Lamb Quayle.
As a family, we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for the nurses and the staff at Washington Terrace Care Center for all of their tender loving care of Marcelle.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17th at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the services, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
Mom, you are now “home” with your family. We love you and we will miss you. But for now, as you would say to us when we would leave you: “Bye, see you later. Thanks for coming!”
