Margaret Pierce Hemmings

1918 – 2017

Margaret Pierce Hemmings was born in Foster City, Michigan, July 21, 1918, Peggy’s family moved to Pasadena, California in 1924.  Peggy was a product of Pasadena schools.  She attended Longfellow Elementary, John Marshall Junior High and Pasadena High School, followed by UCLA.  There she was an Alpha Phi and earned the nickname “Fierce Pierce”.

A graduate of UCLA in the 1930’s and a working woman in the 1940’s; then a wife in November 1944.  She married Bob Hemmings and they celebrated 70 years of marriage together.  Peggy devoted her life to family, friends, and philanthropy.  She inspired her children and grandchildren to be the individuals they are today.  She was a feisty nonagenarian with a fearless spirit.  Peggy was a volunteer for the Assistance League, the Braille Institute, and the Freedom Foundation.  She taught through example about philanthropy and citizenship.

Peggy has two daughters, Ann Wilkes of Layton, Utah and Jill Coddington of Durango, Colorado, sons-in-laws Dennis Wilkes and Jim Coddington, six grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, Grant , Rob, John, Jenny, and eleven great-grandchildren, Chloe, Ella, Cole, Tanner, Kaylee, Grace, Cameron, Brady, Ryan, Evan, and Addie.  A life of family love and service characterize Peggy’s life.  Her family is better because of her strong influence.
