Margaret Freestone Wingate

Margaret Wingate was born in Plain City, Utah on July 6, 1921 to William and Lenora Freestone. She passed away on July 30, 2017 in West Haven, Utah. She grew up in Plain City and attended Weber County Schools.
Margaret married Hosea Wingate on December 20, 1941 and they eventually made their home in Roy, Utah. They had three children, Patricia, Wallace, and Terilee. Hosea worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and they were active in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. She was a member and officer of the women’s auxiliary of the BLF&E and the Clara Barton Division #237. She was a member and officer of the Southern Pacific Old Timers. She was a member of the LDS Church and worked with scouting and the Young Women organization. She was a talented singer and writer and she wrote poetry and entertained family and friends.
Her daughter, Patricia was born with physical and mental disabilities and Margaret became a champion for the rights of disabled children and adults. She worked tirelessly with the Utah State Legislature and local governments to provide programs for children with disabilities. She and a group of parents were instrumental in developed the Canyon View School, which provided special education services for students in Weber County. She and her friend, Maureen Richards, organized the Weber Sheltered Workshop to provide job opportunities for disabled adults and the sheltered workshop has now grown into Enable Utah.
Margaret loved golfing, and she was a member of the Royal Greens Golf Association and the Glen Eagles Golf Association. She was an accomplished cook and she loved to host luncheons for her family, her golfing friends and the railroad association. She also enjoyed bowling, pokeno, and in her later years she discovered artistic talents.
She is survived by her daughter, Terilee Wingate of Olympia, Washington; and her grandson, Michael Norris, US Army. She is also survived by her brothers, Jack Freestone and Howard Freestone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hosea; and children, Patricia and Wallace; her parents, William and Lenora; her sister, Helen Tinsley; and brothers, Lyman Freestone and George Jay Freestone.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret requests donations be made in her memory to Enable Utah.
