Margene Dabling Strong

June 12, 1927 ~ January 27, 2014

Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Margene Dabling Strong, 86, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2014.   She was born in Logan to Harry and Florence Mary Mitchell Dabling on June 12, 1927.  She was raised in Riverdale and Preston, Idaho.

Mom met our Dad, Dern P. Strong while they were neighbors in Washington Terrace.   As “War Time Sweethearts”, they wrote letters throughout Dad’s World War II military service.  They were married one month after his return and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mom was an excellent homemaker and taught her four kids a great work ethic. She went to work for the city, retiring as Municipal Treasurer for Washington Terrace.  After a few short years, she returned to work at the city as Public Works Secretary.

She enjoyed embroidery, particularly crewel, winning many awards at County and State Fairs for her talent.  She also enjoyed genealogical work - primarily indexing records, traveling and camping in a motor home, and riding motorbikes with the ‘Mugwumps’, “mug over the front and wump over the back” (with friends: Wolfards, Bexells, Spendloves, and Greens). Mom and Dad were in a bridge club for years.  She will be remembered as a social woman – a strong-willed ‘fighter’ with a sense of humor who had a great laugh.  She was a measured thinker and concerned with fairness and kindness.  She was compassionate, understanding, and lived without regret.  Mom enjoyed finer things and had an eye for quality.

Mom is survived by her son, Gary L. (Cheryl) Strong, Washington Terrace; son-in-law, Larry D. Horspool, Roy; daughter, Sheryl (Blair) Burnett, Washington Terrace; and daughter , Jana S. (Jeff) Larson, Woods Cross; 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine “Mickey” (Jim) Taylor, Hurricane; brother, Robert “Bob” Dabling, Farr West; and sister, Dorothy “Dot” Thompson, Taylor, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 48 years, Dern; daughter, Ronda S. Horspool; brothers, Dennis and Ralph; and son-in-law, Robert Koger, Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

Special thanks to Dr. Harry Senekjian and Tiffany and Tiersa of Envision Hospice for their skilled and loving care.
