October 9, 1933 ~ August 21, 2022
OGDEN–Maria Veronice “Bernice” Martinez, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2022 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born October 9, 1933 in Velarde, New Mexico, daughter of Ben and Dora Esquibel. Bernice graduated high school in 1953 in New Mexico, and later moved to Ogden, Utah where she lived the remainder of her life.
On May 5, 1956, she married Art Martinez, and they were married for 42 years until Art passed away in 1998.
Bernice was a member of the Catholic Church and made it a priority to say the rosary every night.
She loved spending Saturday mornings finding a good bargain at yard sales and keeping her local DI Store funded Monday through Friday. Some of her favorite things included, crossword puzzles, trips to the fruit stand in Brigham, and going back to New Mexico for visits.
She referred to her great-grandchildren as her “angels” and now she is theirs.
Bernice is survived by her two children, Anthony (Linda) Martinez, Layton and Diana Gallegos, Roy; four grandchildren, Melissa (Connor) Mendenhall, Mindi (Renne) Camara, Jake Gallegos, and Kasey Gallegos; three great-grandchildren, Oliver Camara (6), Bexley Mendenhall (3) and Rowen Camara (2). Bernice is also survived by one brother, Don (Rosa) Esquibel, Addison, Illinois; two sisters, Marie Hawn, Littleton, CO and Evelyn (Hugo) Lopez, San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; one brother, and five sisters.
We all love her dearly and will always miss her, but we are at peace knowing she is reunited with loved ones and will always live in our heart.
