Marian Lindquist Holbrook

1928-2015

Marian Lindquist Holbrook, 86, passed away at home April 25 th 2015, after a 9 year battle with Alzheimer’s.  Her ability to remember and express love to her family was a precious gift that was not taken away with the rest of her memory.

Marian was born to Berna and Clyde Lindquist on September 8, 1928 in Ogden where she was raised with her younger brother and sister.  Before graduating with honors with a B.A. in English from the U of U, Marian led a vibrant college life active in the school newspaper, cheerleaders, student government and excelled in piano. She was chosen as the Founder’s Day Queen and the Dream Girl of Pi Kappa Alpha. It was at the U that she met and fell in love with Eldon Holbrook whom she married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 27, 1951.

Their life together was filled with opportunities to live many places including Japan, Florida, Boise, Casper, Denver, and Chicago, London and Oakland.  Together they had 4 sons and 1 daughter.  They returned to Salt Lake in 1986 where Marian served as an officer in many civic organizations including the Utah Symphony Guild, Utah/Idaho Arthritis Foundation, and the U of U Alumni Association.

Marian was an active and devout member of the LDS church and served in many different callings including Stake RS president in Chicago. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and accompanied countless musical performers and programs.  She and Eldon served 2 full-time proselyting missions; London, England and Oakland, CA. Marian served with compassion and concern, and her Christ-like example will be remembered by all that knew her.

Marian was devoted to her family, and her kids and grandkids always felt cherished and loved.  Birthdays and holidays were special occasions when she would prepare fun activities and special meals.  She loved gathering at the family cabin at Hebgen Lake, travelling, music, skiing, tennis, golf and socializing with friends in book clubs, study groups and dinner groups.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents.  She is survived by her husband, Eldon Holbrook, and 5 children:  Richard (Cindy) Holbrook, James (Kandi) Holbrook, Bryan (Melissa) Holbrook, Jeffrey (Patrice) Holbrook, and Ann (Donaldson) Hartman, as well as her brother Charles (Jerry) Lindquist and sister Ruth (Dex) Farr.  She has 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
