Marian S. Sparrow
OGDEN – Marian Shipley Sparrow, such a sweetheart to her family, friends, and all whom she met, died at her home on Friday, January 2, 2009, of natural causes. She was 92.
Marian was born February 4, 1916, in Riverdale, Utah. She was the fifth child of Moroni J. and Adele Bingham Shipley.
Marian graduated from Weber High School in 1934. At a dance in March of 1938, she met a handsome man and found out it truly was possible to fall in love at first sight. That man was A. Leon Sparrow and four months later on July 22, 1938, they were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Logan LDS Temple. Leon reluctantly left her side on February 17, 2006 when he passed away from cardiac failure.
Marian was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings at church including Relief Society President and working with Leon in the Extraction Program.
The couple loved being together, whether it was traveling the thousands of miles they covered during Leon’s lifelong career in the livestock business, watching the Utah Jazz play, growing beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, or spending time with the family they adored.
Some of Marian’s favorite activities were needlework, shopping with her sisters when she was younger, watching television in her later years, and reading all kinds of books because she loved finding out the ending. Marian’s favorite word was love, least favorite word was hate. She cherished her religion and beliefs, relying on them to help her through the difficult times she endured and blessing her with all the many wonderful things she experienced. Her beliefs are also what gave her the courage to continue on during the past three years without her beloved husband, knowing he was waiting for her on the other side.
Marian is survived by her four children, daughter Karla (Clair) Lott and sons Terry (Laurie) Sparrow, Kelly (Joy) Sparrow and Steve (Arlene) Sparrow, 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her sisters Hazel Flewelling and Genevieve (Ira) Craig; sisters-in-law Donna (Carl) Pingree and Jeanette (Truman) Sparrow.
In addition to her husband, she is also enjoying a very happy reunion with those who preceded her in death including her father and mother; sisters Lynette, Louise, and Betty; and brothers Carl and Bert.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
