Martha Clay

Martha Ann Clay Martha Ann Clay, 67, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Ogden, Utah. She was born August 2, 1940 in Alameda, California as the only child of Howard Edgar Caswell and Maria Dora Pola. While attending U.C. Berkeley, she met and married Hinckley Joseph Foster in September 1959. They were blessed with two loving children: Linda Ann and Michael Hinckley. Because of Joe’s employment with Shell Oil Co. they moved often, residing in St. Louis, MO; Moraga, CA; River Vale, NJ and finally Houston, TX where they divorced. Martha and the children returned to Alameda in 1971 and she began a 23 year career with Wells Fargo Bank, rising from teller to an Assistant Vice President. She enjoyed ballet, tennis and bicycling, and while on a 44 mile bicycle tour, met the love of her life, John Parley Clay. Not only did he bring his loving kindness into her life, but he also introduced her to the true gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly after their marriage on November 29, 1987, she was baptized into the Church, and on December 11, 1992 their marriage was solemnized in the Oakland California Temple. She was delighted to become step-mom to John’s four sons. Together John and Martha became grandparents to 17 grandchildren: Chelsey, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Brendon, Thomas, Alexander, David, Catherine, Lexie, Aaron, Kylie, Matthew, Jake, Julia, Jacob, Nathan and Mitchell. Not long after her baptism, Martha became an avid genealogist, and as the only church member in her family, has submitted over 3000 names for temple ordinances. While she and John were doing research for a book on his great great-grandfather, they made several trips to Utah’s Cache Valley, and in 2002 decided to retire to Logan from California. Martha wrote a book on her maternal grandfather: Attilio Albano Pola – Family History and Genealogy. She is survived by her husband John of Logan, her children; Linda Ann Foye, Alameda, CA (or Linda (J.J.) Ellsworth, Lodi, CA); Michael (Kaye) Foster, Broken Arrow, OK; step-children; Dennis (Stacey) Clay, Antioch, CA; John C. (Teresa) Clay, Keizer, OR; Phillip (Amy) Clay, Lindon, UT; James (Merilee) Clay, Severna Park, MD and the 17 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, June14, 2008 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. where friends may call Friday from 6-8 pm and Sat. 1:00 – 1:45 pm prior to services.
