Martha H. Collett
PROVO - Martha Howard Collett “Martie” passed away December 27, 2009 in Provo, Utah. She was born April 22, 1915 in Nephi, Utah to George E. and Charlotte Adams Howard. She married artist and Professor Farrell R. Collett in 1940 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Martie graduated from Nephi High School and Snow College, and earned her bachelor and masters degrees at Utah State University. At age 19, she began her professional career as librarian at Madison High School in Rexburg and later at Delta High School. After raising her family, she returned to librarianship at Bonneville High School in Ogden. She then became curator of the Howell Library and Special Collections at Weber State University where she retired as Professor Emeritus in 1984.
Martie served on numerous state and national library committees and was president of the Utah Library Association, School Section. She served at several Western Literature and Young People’s Literature workshops at Weber State. She lectured and consulted at professional conferences in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, and received many professional awards.
Martie coveted the honor of being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved life and people and did much for young people, even taking them into her home. She loved to travel with Farrell and spent a memorable year in Spain and Portugal. Following retirement, she and Farrell moved to St. George. She was a wonderful care-giver to Farrell in his declining months of life, and intensely independent until she lost her sight in July.
All who came to know Martie discovered her capacity to love and serve. She was devoted to her family, and will always be remembered for her kindness and caring, from her handwritten notes of encouragement or thanks, to an unexpected plate of warm cookies, to her gracious hosting and home-cooked meals for family and friends.
She is survived by two sons Michael (Anne) and Howard (Joan), 10 grandchildren Joel, Jody (Johan) Hoegstedt, Kelly, Kimberly (Jeff) Plank, Christopher, Clark, Richard (Sara), Robert, Julie, and Jessica (Jed) Larsen and 11 great-grandchildren.
Martie was preceded in death by her husband Farrell in 2000 and all of her 10 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2nd at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
The family will meet friends at the mortuary that morning from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
