Mary Lena Backus

February 5, 1929 ~ June 7, 2017

Mary Lena Backus passed away Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 with her loving husband, sons and daughter by her side.

Mary was born February 5, 1929, to Earl Morgan and Jennie Brimhall in Vernal, Utah.  Mary graduated from Vernal High School in 1947.  She then went to work in the local 5 & Dime where she met William (Bill) Backus; and on Valentine’s Day in 1948, in Bountiful, Utah, she married her sweetheart Bill.  Bill and Mary were blessed with four wonderful and loving children, who all remained very close to the family.  They were later blessed with 13 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren, whom she loved very dearly; she was so very proud of each and every one of them, and their accomplishments in life. Bill and Mary traveled with their family between Texas and Utah, constructing houses, owning a motorcycle rental business and (Bill) working as a Gov’t civil servant till retirement. Mom lived for her children and grandchildren; she loved cooking, quilting and making special clothes for them.  One of our most memorable and cherished memories of our mother was the fresh baked bread when we arrived home from school. Thank you Mom, for the life you have given us and all the special memories we have with you.  We love you, mom!

Mary was a member of the LDS church and also worked for the Davis County School District.

Mary passed away at her home in Syracuse, Utah and is survived by her loving husband (Bill) of almost 70 years; her children: Greg (Delores) Backus, Mary Ann (Steve) Fletcher, Lynn (Karla) Backus and Gene (Tracy) Backus.  She was preceded in death by her parents: Earl and Jennie Brimhall and her siblings Adair Brimhall, Keith Brimhall, Kermit Brimhall and Edna Schofield.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Rocky Mountain Hospice team and especially to: (CNA) Angel and (RN) Brandy for their tireless efforts in taking care of our very special mother.  We would also like to thank her doctor: Brett Burtenshaw for his wonderful care, as well.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  A visitation and celebration of our mother will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Rocky Mountain Hospice, 523 Heritage Park Blvd., Layton, Utah 84041.
