Mary V Carbiener

Mary V. Carbiener “Grandma Sugar” Mary passed away peacefully at home, March 2, 2010. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 3, 1927 to Mary and Dominic Lopes. Her mother later married Frank Ciaverarelli, who raised her from the age of three. The family moved to California when Mary was 13. She married Del Carbiener on November 2, 1947. They have two children Linda Marie and Gregory G. Carbiener. Mary’s fondest childhood memories are of her maternal grandparents Pietro and Angelina Leone, and her favorite uncle, Frank Leone. Mom graduated from Venice High School in 1945. She then worked for Bank of America while she waited for Dad to return from World War II. Mom met Dad when they were both 15, where they lived on the same block. On their first encounter, Mom was walking with her younger brother Reno, when she passed Dad and his friends sitting in his front yard. Dad whistled at her, and Mom told Dad that she didn’t think that was very nice. Dad then told her she should be flattered because he never whistled at a girl before. Mom and Dad became good friends. When Dad joined the Navy, they wrote each other throughout the war. When he returned, they dated for two years before they married and remained sweethearts for sixty wonderful years. Mom was very artistic. She was an accomplished pianist, china painter, and was a gifted home decorator. Mom always set a beautiful formal dining table. You always felt like royalty when you dined at Mom and Dad’s home. Mom loved her family, they were her treasures. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Marie Nesi (Joseph) son Gregory, sister Joanne Johnson (Vance); grandson, Neal, Matthew, and Alan Witbeck (Julie); granddaughter Nikole Haslam, great-grandchildren Amanda Witbeck, Dalton and Kole Van Komen and Grace Ann Witbeck as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary had a kind and gentle manner and was always loving. Our family wishes to express our sincerest thanks to Hearts of Hospice, who cared for Mom and treated her with love, dignity and respect. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10 am at St Olaf Catholic church, 1800 S. Orchard Dr. Bountiful. Friends may call Friday from 6- 8 pm with vigil at 7:45 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. Interment Bountiful City Cemetery.
