Mary Lu Scofield Nelson
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Mary Lu Nelson passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2015. Mary was born February 8th, 1935 to Burton and Linnea Scofield. She graduated Ogden High School in 1953 and promptly moved to California. She married Melvin O. Nelson on October 3rd, 1954 in Las Vegas, NV; and later divorced in 1975. They had four children together, with one child dying shortly after birth.
Mary started working for a local radio station, Kall AM-910, in 1964 and remained working full time for 36 years, longer at that time than any other on and off air personalities. Mary loved her job and worked several years part time following her ‘retirement’.
Mary loved to travel and would even travel alone if necessary. Her travels took her too many places in the United States and abroad such as Thailand, Vietnam, England, Mexico, Peru (Machu Picchu), Costa Rica, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Amazon, and a cruise around Cape Horn.
Mary also loved the theatre. She was a season ticket holder at Pioneer Theater for over 20 years.
Mary loved to volunteer and spent many years volunteering at the Information desk for the previous Cottonwood Hospital and then Intermountain Medical Center.
Another one of Mary’s loves was dogs. She had several dogs over the years to keep her company and loved to walk with and care for them.
Mary loved her family and enjoyed planning family functions and having loved ones visit. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by sisters Ava Milligan (Dennis), Betty Fortier (John), brother, Burton Scofield (Sandra), children, Michael Nelson (Sue), Cathy Nelson (Alan Jobin), Mark Nelson (Kelly) grandchildren, Dawn Nelson Thompson, Justin Nelson and Jenifer Nelson Jewell and four great grandchildren, Cadence, Ryan, Courtney and Violet.
A special thanks to Sunrise of Sandy and Rocky Mountain Hospice for their loving care and support for our mother.
In lieu of flowers donate to the Humane Society or the Alzheimer’s association.
