Mary Genevieve Velasquez Salaz

OGDEN – Mary Genevieve Velasquez Salaz, 91, passed away October 10, 2016.

She was born November 26, 1924, the daughter of Carlos P. Velasquez and Sofia Lovato in Rosa, New Mexico.

Mary married Joseph E. Salaz on December 1, 1945 in Durango, Colorado.  They were married 70 years.

Mary and Joseph moved to Utah in 1945 after he was discharged from the Marines.   They have lived in the same home since 1951.

She was a Nursing Assistant at Mercy Hospital in Durango, Colorado where she started working at the age of 14 and retired from St. Benedicts Hospital in Ogden, Utah after 22 years of services.

Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Promoters.  She also was a CCD teacher for several years.

Surviving are her three children, Robert Salaz (Denise), Darlene Zultewicz (Joe), Vickie Samarrae (Jawdat), three sisters, Mary Lena Arlofski (David), Juanita Schick (Ron), Cathy Trentman (John), two brothers, Louie (Lou) Payan (Tammy), Bill Velasquez (Debbie), four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Salaz, four grandsons, Tony Samarrae, Kyle, Shane and Chadd Salaz, two brothers, Mike and Chuck Velasquez and sister Belinda Lopez.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 10 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 495 No. Harrison Blvd, Ogden.  Rosary will be held at 11 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow.

Due to construction on Harrison Blvd you will need to take Monroe to North Street, turn right on North Street to Jackson, turn left on Jackson to 425 North, turn right on 425 North uphill to the parking lot of St. James Catholic Church.

Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe Blvd, Ogden.

A special thank you to her sisters and cousin Alice Vieu for their love and dedication to our Mother.  Thank you to the Rocky Mountain Nursing staff and Rocky Mountain Hospice for caring for her.
