Maryalice Hampton Marx; born in Carmarthen, Wales, April 27, 1951 passed away at University of Utah Medical Center April 25, 2021. She lived a life full of adventure, education and service. At a young age she traveled and lived in many places with her family. When she was 18 she attended the University of Utah and liked Utah so much she decided to stay for the rest of her life.
She lived a life of adventure. She loved hiking and exploring new places. Her favorite place to hike was at Lake Powell in southern Utah. She loved swimming and all types of skiing. One of her favorite stories was how her parents bribed her to move in her last semester of High School by sending her on a skiing trip to Vermont. She owned a horse ranch and taught a riding course for the University of Utah.
She believed that Education was the most important thing a person could do for themselves. She believed a person could always learn more. She read every day that she could. When her children were young she imprinted this same idea on them. If they did not know a word rather than telling them what it was she had them grab her massive dictionary, an OED, and look it up. She tracked each book she read. In 2020 she read 621 books. You could say she was Voracious. She taught every person she came into contact with.
She lived a life of service. Starting with her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints she believed through service to others we help ourselves become better. She served in many positions at the church one of her favorites was as a Sunday school teacher for the sunbeams. She served as a board member for Utah Swimming for 10 years. She served as an official for USA Swimming for more than 20 years. She served as a service unit cookie manager for the Girl Scouts for 8 years. She loved her family and friends and served them.
She will be missed by many including her husband, two children, and five grandchildren.
