Maureen Knight Howe

July 28, 1958 — February 18, 2021

Maureen “Moe” Nichols Knight Howe

July 27, 1958 ~ February 18, 2021

Maureen joined her granddaughter Avery in Heaven on February 18, 2021.

She was born in Ogden on July 27, 1958, to Jerry and Beth Nichols. She was the fourth of five children. Maureen grew up and adventured around Pleasant View. Oh how she loved to talk about the glory days of her childhood. The Nichols home was open to all, so often one would find friends and family gathered for laughs and shenanigans. Maureen enjoyed playing volleyball, softball and backyard games with the family and neighborhood kids. As a teenager, she loved music and volunteered as a symphony deb at Weber State. She graduated from Weber High School where she made friendships that latest through the years.

Maureen married her high school sweetheart, Kevin Garver, on April 9, 1976, and they had a daughter, Nicole. They were later divorced but remained as friends until his death. She later married Rich Knight on March 23, 1979 and was later divorced. They had three daughters Tricia, Brittany and Ashley. Maureen loved her daughters with all her heart and was very proud of each one. She married Paul Howe on August 31, 2011 and they spent 29 years together.

Maureen worked for the IRS for most of her adult life where she met a number of her closest friends. She recently retired after 29 years of service.

Relationships were very important to Maureen and she spent a lot of time developing meaningful friendships. She possessed a natural capacity to love others without judgement. She treated everyone with kindness and respect no matter your title or status in life. She had the biggest heart and would do anything to help someone in need. It is amazing how many people she knew and how easily she made friends everywhere she went. One of her favorite things to do when in a line at drive-thru window was to start a “pay it forward” daisy chain and pay for the car behind her. It gave her great joy to surprise people with acts of kindness.

Growing up she always loved furry creatures and that love of animals was a constant throughout her life. Over the years, she had a variety of pets, but especially adored her cats. Her two oldest grandsons named her “Grandma Kitty”. Though she was not particularly happy about this nickname, she could not say no to those cute little faces and the name stuck.

She valued family and they meant everything to her. She enjoyed spending time with her brothers and sister. Her sister, Shauna, was born with Down’s Syndrome and Maureen was the greatest of big sisters by helping her parents take care of Shauna. They had a special bond that could never be broken. She cherished all her time she spent with her children and grandchildren. They were the light of her life. The grandkids loved when their grandma came over because she was the quintessential “fun” grandma. She would play games, bring unapproved, sugary treats and listen to every word they said.

She is preceded in death by her father Jerry, brother Steven, granddaughter Avery Wong, brothers-in-law Layne Johnson and Ray Howe, and her soul sister-in-law Tyana Knight.

Maureen is survived by her husband Paul Howe, mother Beth Nichols, brothers Verle and Brent (Tracie), sister Shauna Johnson, daughters Nicole (Dee) Nevels, Tricia (Christopher) Ross, Brittany (Paul) Hawkes, Ashley (Michael) Wong, Amber Gross, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her passing is a great loss to all those who know her. She will be missed and forever be in our hearts.
