Maurine Robison Sanders
Maurine Robison Sanders, 88, died Saturday, May 19, after a long history of Parkinson''s disease. She died in Beaverton, Oregon where she recently moved to be near one of her daughters after the death last year of her husband, O. Ross Sanders. Maurine was born February 5, 1919, in Overton, Nevada, the daughter of Joseph Benjamin Robison and Mildred Andersen Robison. She married O. Ross Sanders on March 27, 1942, in the Mesa, Arizona temple. Maurine lived in Overton until she was a young adult, completing beauty school to become a beautician. She soon after was called on an L.D.S. Spanish American Mission in San Antonio, Texas where she first met her husband, Ross.
After marriage, when Ross went to Panama during World War II, Maurine returned briefly to Nevada before joining Ross at his father''s southern Idaho cattle ranch. In a small sod-roof cabin twenty-five miles from the closest town, Maurine cared for her husband and her first child, while fixing meals for hungry cowboys. She also helped with farm duties such as driving the tractor and feeding the animals.
Maurine was a co-partner and co-owner, with Ross, of various small businesses. They built and managed the Sunset Motel and the Utah Oil gas distributorship in Malta, Idaho. In 1952, they moved to Clearfield, Utah where they owned and managed a Western Auto store for many years. They also owned Western Auto stores in Roy and Provo, Utah. Through the years they purchased rental homes, apartments and a mobile home park in Elko, Nevada, providing housing for many individuals and families.
Maurine was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as Relief Society and Young Women''s President, choir director, organist, bishop''s wife, scribe for her husband when he served as Patriarch, as well as other positions of responsibility. She and her husband served two additional Spanish-speaking missions in Mexico and Ecuador during their retirement years.
Maurine is survived by her children Anita Chalmers of Claremont, California; Teresa McFadden of Orem, Utah; Darlene Johnson of Federal Way, Washington; Ilene Brems of Tigard, Oregon; and Larry O. Sanders of Layton, Utah. She has 36 grandchildren, and 56 great-grandchildren. Maurine gave the gift of music to her family. As a result of her own talent and encouragement, several of her children and grandchildren are professional musicians. Her brother, Ray Robison, and sister, Ruth Leavitt, of Overton, Nevada, and her sister Shirley Bullard of Grants Pass, Oregon, also survive her.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.
