Mavis Hurst Burnett, 89, of West Point, Utah, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Stonehenge Care Center of Ogden. Mavis was born on September 18, 1935, in St. John’s, Arizona, to Lorin Winslow and Hester Richey Hurst. Mavis grew up in St. John’s and in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1953.
Mavis married Don Raymond Burnett on May 28, 1954, in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three children, Debra Ann (Bruce Harker) of Green Acres, Washington; Scott Raymond Burnett (Marianne Lloyd) of Salt Lake City; and Paul Richard Burnett (deceased).
Don and Mavis resided in Ogden, Utah, Oakland and Palos Verdes, California, Dallas and McKinney, Texas, North Brunswick, New Jersey, and in Gig Harbor and Pasco, Washington. Following Don’s passing in 2009, Mavis moved to West Point, Utah.
Mavis served a 3-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Department in Salt Lake City. She was a member of the Utah Daughters of Pioneers.
During her lifetime she worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office and for Kodak in New Jersey. Don and Mavis created, owned, and operated a prosperous business in Tacoma, Washington called Personal Design Concepts.
She loved crafts! She was an excellent seamstress. Mavis took classes in cake decorating, hat-making, and making porcelain dolls, for which she made all the clothes. Mavis loved to travel! Destinations included Israel, France, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Africa, and Mexico, to name a few.
Mavis’ surviving posterity includes daughter, Debbie Harker; son, Scott Burnett; 14 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Winslow, Douglas and Dale Hurst; and sister, Elaine Hopper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Burnett; son, Paul; her parents, Winslow and Hester Hurst; and two sisters, Janice Hedin and Karen Lanier.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
