MAX STANLEY OOSTYEN

1944-2015

Max Stanley Oostyen was born in Ogden, Utah, on May 26, 1944, in the midst of a World War.  He slipped peacefully from this life on March 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, to be reunited with his parents and older brother, John, who preceded him in death.

His parents were John Andrew Oostyen and Jennie Unck Oostyen—both children of Dutch immigrants.  He was raised and educated in the Ogden area, graduating from Ogden High School in 1962.  He attended Weber College, where he met a friendly girl named Sue Grant at Homecoming.  They were married a year later, November 24, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple.

His business background at Weber College prepared him to serve as an IRS Tax Specialist for 37 years, gleaning much experience as a consultant when others had questions.  He enjoyed many associations along the way and was a loyal friend and colleague.

His “leisure time” was everyone else’s idea of work.  He arose early in the morning to begin working outside: gardening and yard work; backpacking and hiking with his daughters, sons-in-law, and friends; dog walking; biking to and from his job; cutting and stacking firewood (his and others).  A good day for Max was an outside day.  His favorite time was Family Time.

Max was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding a variety of positions: Elders’ Quorum, Young Men’s, and Sunday School presidencies; varied clerk assignments; Primary and Sunday School teacher; Scouting Assistant for 5 ½ years (following the same scouts from Webelos to Venturers).

His favorite calling, however, was that of “Papa” to his beloved nine grandchildren: Carston and Emily Morrell; Jacob, Ashley, and Alexis Frost; Claire and James Northrop; and Ian and Isaak Alleman (each of whom thought they were his favorite).

Max is survived by his wife Sue and his five amazing daughters and their husbands: Jennie Flores (Noe); Alyse Frost (Dan); Beth Northrop (Jared); Anne Thomas (Tony); and Sara Alleman (Joe); his mother-in-law, Marilyn Grant Bennion; his sister-in-law, Sally Oostyen; and his wife’s siblings.  He is preceded in death by his birth family and his son-in-law, Jeremy Burgess.

The family extends grateful thanks to the kindnesses of family, friends, and neighbors.  They also appreciate the long-term compassion of Dr. Vincent Hansen and his professional, caring staff.  Also, many thanks to Dr. Barbara Kerwin and the nurses at McKay-Dee Hospital ICU for their capable and tender care.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2015, at 11 a.m. the Ben Lomond 9th Ward, 575 East 3100 North, North Ogden.  Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd., and on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

Contributions may be made to the Max Oostyen Memorial Fund at any America First Credit Union.
