Maxine Marshall Bailey
March 5, 1932 – January 8, 2022
Layton, Utah—Maxine Marshall Bailey passed away peacefully January 8, 2022, at Fairfield Village in Layton. She loved this life, but she’ll be happy to be free from her physical limitations. The joyful reunion with her loved ones who have passed was something she looked forward to. Her clear mind and desire to serve others lasted until just a few hours before her death.
She was born in Minersville, Utah on March 5, 1932 to Goldwin Marshall and Hilda Myers Marshall. She was raised on a dairy farm in Minersville in a large and loving family.
Maxine married Donald Earl Horton on June 24, 1955 in Minersville, Utah. She had two children from this marriage: Kim Horton Cahoon and Dan E. Horton.
Following her divorce, she attended college in Cedar City and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. She moved to Magna, Utah where she taught first and second grade at Magna Elementary for many years. She also taught at Carl Sandberg Elementary in West Valley City. After she retired, she substituted for a few years in the Davis School District.
She married Wesley G. Sykes in 1962. This marriage also ended in divorce.
She met Ralph J. Bailey at a church dance and forever changed her life for the better. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 21, 1974. This brought three stepsons into her life: R.J. Bailey, Todd Bailey and Gene Bailey. She loved her children and cherished her 11 grandchildren, their spouses, and 20 great- grandchildren. She also loved her siblings and their children dearly. Family reunions meant much to her. She loved to feed everyone who visited her. Her Thanksgiving feasts were amazing.
Her hobbies and interests were walking, gardening, shopping, housekeeping, dancing, and she loved attending musical theater productions. She was so proud that her grandchildren performed in many of these shows. Sometimes her walks were more of a stroll because she would visit with everyone she saw. She loved going anywhere her friends would take her. Her home was immaculate, and her wardrobe was very fashionable.
She faithfully served in the LDS Church as a primary teacher, visiting teacher, Relief Society teacher, and she enjoyed directing road shows. For several years she weekly recorded Sacrament meeting programs and delivered the recordings to the homebound. One of her most cherished callings was serving in the Special Needs Mutual.
She is survived by her children Kim (Bob) Cahoon, R.J. Bailey, Dan E. (Holly) Horton, Todd (Jeanette) Bailey, Gene (Shirley) Bailey, the grandchildren and a brother Kent (Mary Faye) Marshall.
She is preceded in death by Ralph, her parents, her sisters: Geraldine, Gladys, LaRee, Helen, and her brothers: Lee and Hayward. The reunion with them and her friends will be a great celebration.
