Mazie Flanders Crays
June 20, 1948 ~ May 24, 2021
Mazie Flanders Crays, age 72, passed away May 24, 2021, in her home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with dementia. Mazie was born June 20, 1948, to Claudius Bryan and Ruby (Barber) Flanders and spent her childhood in Centerville, Utah. As the oldest of six children, she cultivated a strong love of service and dedication to family. After graduation from Viewmont High School’s Class of 1966, Mazie became a flight attendant for Western Airlines.
She married, was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, and had two daughters, Lisa and Tina. After starting a family, she began her journey as an entrepreneur with a craft store in Centerville called, “The Treasure Pedlar.” She went on to build two more successful businesses in the chemical and circuit board industry, “Intermountain Circuit Supply” and “SurfaceTek” which were sold to the Morton Salt Company. In her early 50’s she retired from marriage and the businesses. Mazie enjoyed her golden years traveling, caring for her father, being an amazing grandma, spending time with extended family, and being of service to family, friends, and her church community.
Everyone loves Mazie. She often introduced herself as “Crazy Mazie” to help people remember her name and had a gift of making friends everywhere she went. Pure in heart, she did not speak negatively of anyone and always focused on the positives. She is a loyal friend and was a gracious hostess. She loved to gather friends and family in her home. The core leader of the group, she held together childhood friendships lasting to this day. Mazie was welcoming, warm, and supportive of everyone she met.
Mazie loved attending theater productions with her friends. She always had season tickets, often at more than one theater company. She enjoyed hiking and being outdoors in her younger years. She worked tirelessly in her yard to create a meticulous landscape, and thoroughly enjoyed a nice nap.
She devoted her life to her daughters who were the true loves of her life. There was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them. She is the mom who would pull all-nighters to help finish school projects, who gladly paid for every camp, trip, and opportunity that came along to add to her girls’ education and experience. She is the mom who helped you paint your whole house, who called you every day to check in and see how your day was, and who was always there to help with anything you needed. She is the mom who supported your choices, even if she wouldn’t have chosen the same for you. She loved her grandchildren as her own children, and she absolutely loved to spoil them.
Mazie has an eternal love of her Savior and is an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She surrounded herself with the Church’s teachings and her home is a gallery of the Savior’s life. A faithful visiting teacher, she loved to minister to her fellow sisters, rejoiced in regular temple service, and enjoyed serving in various callings in The Church. She was a life-long gospel learner and participated in Institute classes throughout her adult life. Her life is a beautiful example of Christlike service and unconditional love.
Mazie is survived by her children, Lisa (Josh) Hoopes and Tina (Joseph) Freivald; grandchildren, Hunter and Hana Hoopes; siblings, Ferrin (Wendy) Flanders, Nina (Randy) Weaver, Gordon (Chris) Flanders, Doris (Rick) Martin and Jared (JoLynn) Flanders.
Mazie is reunited with her mother, father and grandson, Holden Hoopes.
