Melba Holmes Cheney
KAYSVILLE a" Melba Holmes Cheney, 87, Beloved, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, daughter and sister returned to her Heavenly Father and her eternal mate, Evan, on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 after a courageous battle with injuries and conditions incident to age. She was born July 11, 1921 in Liberty, UT, through the Garden of Eden and over the hill from Paradise. She was the oldest daughter of ten children born to Parley Clifford and Etta Ione Bailey Holmes.
She was married to Evan James Cheney on September 2, 1939 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 65 years.
She was a crusader for righteousness, a stalwart member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and served in various callings throughout her life, including Visiting Teacher and Primary President. She attended the Kaysville 2nd.Ward and Kaysville 1st Ward. She attended the temple, for many years and she loved the gospel and had a valiant testimony of Jesus Christ.
She had many interests, and a great love for learning. She enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening, cooking, and taking pictures. She had a talent for writing; she enjoyed many kinds of music, and had a unique love for home and family, her children, grandchildren and their families. She had a fun personality and a great sense of humor. She also cared a lot about others, and was a wonderful Christ like person who was loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her three children,, Karen (Carter) Cook, Layton; James Hal (Judy) Cheney, Ogden; Jan Byron (Loretta) Cheney, Bountiful; brothers, Jay (Jerry) Holmes, Ogden; Doug (Peggy) Holmes, Ogden, Denny (Beverly) Holmes, Hawaii and Layton; sister, Wanda Holmes Cherry, Ogden; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, one granddaughter, one grandson and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Kaysville 2nd Ward Rock Chapel, 25 South 200 East, Kaysville. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main Street, and Thursday from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at the Church.
The family wishes to thank Rocky Mt. Care Center, Country Pines Assisted Living Center, Gentle Home Health Care, Hospice of Utah and Dr. Gary Holland for their love and care.
