Melba Fowkes Cowen, 93, of Layton, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Manor Care in South Ogden of causes incident to old age.

Melba along with her twin sister Mabel was born December 18, 1915, in Nephi, Juab County, Utah, a daughter of Heber James and Ruby Downs Fowkes. She was married to Alex Schofield Cowan on October 4, 1939 in the Manti LDS Temple. He passed away on October 12, 1962.

Melba was raised in Mona and Nephi, attending school in Nephi. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She worked in the lunch room at Whitesides Elementary for a number of years. She also taught piano lessons from her home.

She is survived by sons; Peter F. (Eva) Cowan, North Ogden; George A. (Mary Lou) Cowan, Troy, MO; Michael J. Cowan, Layton; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and sister, Bessie Jones, Nephi, Utah.

Preceded in death by her husband, Alex; her parents; brothers; John, Gerald, Loren and Ray; sisters; Ruby, Emma, Mabel and Alice.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main. Friends and family may call Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
