Melborne Roberts

Melborne Roberts, age 90, passed away April 1, 2016. Mel was born in Afton, Wyoming, August 13, 1925 to Melford and Lois (Campbell) Roberts, the third of six children. He has one surviving sister, Jeanne Hansen, of Washington Terrace, Utah.
He graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. Thereafter, joining the US Navy, serving for three years in the South Pacific. Many times during his service he played tenor sax and clarinet with Navy bands organized to entertain the troops.
He married Althea Andelin in 1950. They have five children: Sydnee (Steve) Hensley, Chell (Dot), Bern (Margo), Neesha (Ron) Terry, and Kassilee (Kendal) Madsen.
Mel graduated from U of U with a Masters Degree in Music Education in 1951. He taught in Roberts, Ririe, and Idaho Falls, Idaho; also in Sunset and Kaysville, Utah.
He was also a woodwind instructor at Ricks College.
He was known for producing many high quality bands and received numerous superior ratings during his 35 year career. He played the oboe with the Idaho Falls Symphony. For 22 years he played with various bands, volunteering at many Senior Citizen Centers in Ogden and vicinity.
Mel was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions, including 10 years as an ordinance worker in the Ogden LDS Temple.
He was very patriotic and loved reading, the outdoors, fishing and gardening, and for many years was an avid swimmer.
The family would like to thank Dana Evans, Dr. Kurtis Woolf, and all others for their many kindnesses and professional care. Dad so much appreciated you.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the Sand Ridge Ward Chapel, 4900 South 2000 West, Roy. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
