Our dear husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away quietly in Salt Lake City on November 13, 2013.
Melvin was born in Leslie, Idaho and lived there until adulthood. He was active in music, basketball, and wrestling. After graduating from Mackay High School he attended Ricks College. He served two years in the Army in Europe during World War II. Melvin then served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission. Afterwards Melvin married Derena Watson on April 4, 1950 in the Idaho Falls Temple. He earned his bachelor''s degree from Ricks and attended BYU. While raising five children Melvin and Derena lived in West Covina, California; Bountiful, Utah; Marion, Iowa; Brigham City, Utah; Santa Clara and San Jose, California; and finally settled into their home in Pleasant View, Utah. Melvin worked in the auditing field his entire career, ultimately retiring from the U.S. Department of Defense. Following retirement, Melvin and Derena served a genealogy mission in Roanoke, Virginia.
Melvin was a tall, strong man, an avid gardener and a hard worker. He was well known for his beautiful tenor voice and sang in many choirs. He was very faithful in his church service, serving as a temple worker, bishop (twice), branch president, young men''s president, high councilor, gospel doctrine teacher, and many other callings. Melvin loved the scriptures and referred to them often. Melvin was known for his dependability, calmness, keen mind and his love of a fun joke. He saw the good in people.
Melvin is survived by his wife Derena, five children: Jeanine Tew, Ryan (Melanie) Tew, Tawnya (Craig) Nielsen, Glade (Donnette) Tew, and Shannon Tew; twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
