Merlin Harvey Butler
Layton, Utah - Merlin Harvey Butler, 88, passed away March 19, 2021, at home with his sweetheart by his side, from congestive heart failure. He was born March 7, 1933 in Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah to Harvey Jonathan Butler and Mary Van Kampen Butler. He attended grade school in the Ogden area, moving with his family to a farm in Kuna, Idaho in 1946, where he graduated from High School and met his sweetheart, Wilma Fuhriman. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, for time and all eternity on February 18, 1952, and recently celebrated 69 years of marriage.
He attended Nampa Business College, then served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. Upon discharge, they located in the Ogden area, where he attended Weber College. He worked at Hill Air Force Base where he received several awards. He retired in June 1991 with 36 years of service. Merlin was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many capacities; namely, Presidents of Sunday school, Young Men Mutual, Elders Quorum and Bishopric Counselor, Boy Scout Committee Chairman, and High Priest Presidency. He loved his vegetable garden, fruit and nut trees, and livestock. He was an avid Camper, fisherman, and hunter. He was a talented handyman/mechanic. There were few things he could not build, repair, overhaul, or weld. He found joy in his family and loved visiting and reminiscing with them. He suffered most of his later life with extreme back pain, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia, however always loved being surrounded by his family.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma, of Layton, UT, three children, Pamela Butler (Jeff) Macfarlane, West Point, UT, Ann Butler (Richard) Packard, Evanston, WY, Brian Wayne (Marilyn) Butler, Wesley Chapel, FL, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by one brother, Lynn D (Elisabeth) Butler FL. He was preceded in death by one son, Andy King Butler (1980), his parents, two brothers, Clarence H. Butler and Ellis K. Butler, and two sisters, Evelyn Butler Jepsen and Helen Butler Kroeger.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kennington Ward, 628 S. Angel Street, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
