Merlin Mayberry, 81, a witty and fun-loving spirit, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, surrounded by her children and her beloved husband, Dale. Born on October 16, 1942, in Orangeville, she was the youngest of nine children.
Merlin was first married to Larry Butterfield, with whom she had four children: Brent (Kristie) Butterfield, Jay (Jamee) Butterfield, Terri (Robert) Zaelit, and Cory (Janet) Butterfield. After her divorce, she married Myrl Clegg, sharing many cherished years until his passing. Later, she found love again with Dale. Together, they enjoyed simple pleasures, treasuring time with their children, 13 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.
Merlin worked as a lunch lady at Riverdale Elementary, where she was beloved by students and staff alike. Known for her legendary rolls and peanut butter bars, she was also an amazing seamstress. She had a passion for photography and gardening, especially tending to her cherished hibiscus flowers.
Merlin had a zest for life that was evident in everything she did. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding various callings and serving her community with a heart full of love. Additionally, she was a proud member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, cherishing her heritage and the connections it brought.
Christmas was a particularly special time for her, marked by her ever-growing Christmas village that began as a small corner display and eventually took over her entire covered deck.
An outdoors enthusiast, Merlin loved fishing, camping, power walking, and bike rides. She found joy in creating colorful yard art that brightened her neighborhood. When not outdoors, she enjoyed shopping, dancing and reading.
Merlin’s warmth, love, and boundless energy touched everyone who knew her, and her legacy of kindness and laughter will live on through her family.
