Merrill Dean Despain passed away on March 7, 2023 at his home in Layton, Utah. He was born April 2, 1935 in Axtell, Utah to Fearon Charles and Isabelle Marie Sorensen Despain. He is survived by his two daughters, Julia Despain and Lorinda Despain, his grandson Ryan St. Michael, and his brothers and sisters: Lavell Despain, Arlo Despain, Evelyn Murray, Marlene Despain, Carolyn Ellison, and Clark Despain. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, and his twin brother, Marius Deon Despain, who passed away exactly 13 years before him, on March 7, 2010.
Merrill graduated as valedictorian from Gunnison Valley High School in 1954 and went on to continue his education at Utah State University, where he received a teaching degree. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1957, where he was stationed at Fort Carson for about a year. He was honorably discharged when the need for teachers became greater than the need for soldiers in the war. Merrill worked as a teacher for some time, and eventually ended up working at Hill Air Force Base, where he was a computer systems manager. This is where he would work for over 30 years before retiring.
In 1976, Merrill met and married Loralee Holt. They were married for almost 20 years and had two daughters. After they divorced, Merrill gained custody of his daughters and raised them by himself. He was an amazing father. Merrill was an honest, hardworking man who never had anything bad to say about anyone. He loved spending time outdoors and loved to travel and go camping with his family. He was extremely close with his grandson Ryan. Merrill had many friends and family members who will miss him greatly.
