Michael Eugene Collins
November 11, 1934 - December 20, 2020
Michael Collins, 86, was a bright and happy husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa who was loved by many people. He passed away in Layton, Utah.
He married Sally M. Whitesides on January 21, 1954, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Mike joined the Army during the Korean War and served for two years, H Company, 63rd Infantry Division. He worked as a motor pool parts specialist at Fort Ord, CA.
He worked at Hill Air Force Base. He started cleaning B-26 plane parts in high school and worked various jobs in the Civil Service. He spent one year on assignment in California and four years in Tehran, Iran. He ended his career as a logistics officer for various weapon systems. He retired from HAFB in 1979 and spent nine years driving a school bus for students with special needs. Sally was the aide on that bus.
As a hobby Mike bought a total of 17 Corvairs, rebuilt them and sold them. He also enjoyed making sand art pieces in his back shop.
Mike and Sally served a mission together in the New Jersey Morristown, and Cherry Hill Missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning in May 1995. He also served in the Ogden Temple for seven years.
Church callings include Stake Missionary, Branch Secretary, Finance Clerk, Bishopric Counselor, Branch President, Sunday School President, High Councilor, Teacher, High Priest Group Leader, Senior Missionary, and Temple Worker.
Mike and Sally have three sons, Scott (Pam), Marty (Lisa), David (Kelley), and one daughter Karen (Paul), 18 grandchildren and 32 great grand children.
Michael is survived by two sisters, Susan Linker, (WA) and Janice Collins (Gwynn, VA) He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin E. and Myrtle A. Hall Collins and Ethel May Caffall Collins; brothers Patrick and Robert Collins; grandson Kit Collins; and great grandchildren Corbin Nelson and Vivienne Green.
Graveside service for family and close friends will be held on January 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Kaysville City Cemetery.
