Michael Keith Meldrum, 66, passed away on February 3, 2025, at his home in Ogden, Utah. Born on April 8, 1958, in Brigham City, Utah, to Shirley Irene Holmgren and Dallas Eugene Meldrum, Mike started life destined for greatness. He often mentioned (repeatedly and with great enthusiasm) that he was awarded first place in the Bear River baby contest that year.
Mike grew up in Roy, Utah, where he played basketball, delivered newspapers, rode a dirt bike, earned his eagle scout rank at age 14, and raised an impressive number of kittens for someone allergic to cats. He later graduated from Roy High School as the most famous Royal alumnus to date, only to be surpassed by Jim McMahon one year later. After graduation, he married Lori Lin Horspool on November 6, 1976. Together they had three wonderful children—Katie, Nicholas, and Julia—who all remarkably inherited the same baby contest winning traits as their father. While Mike and Lori eventually went their separate ways, they continued to be involved in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
Mike worked various jobs over the years, including at Globe Fish, Autoliv, and the post office. He coached baseball and softball teams for his kids. He put on a suit and tie and made sure to be present for every baby blessing, baptism, and wedding despite being not too fond of church or social events. He made time for birthdays and held an annual Christmas talent show for his grandkids. He had many great loves: his grandchildren, a good game of cards, caramel, the Chicago Cubs, traveling, The Beatles, Stephen King novels, watching his favorite shows, calico cats, and solving all the world’s problems with his “unique” ideas.
Mike is survived by his cat Bear; his children: Katie (Kevin) Ellis, Nick (Stacey) Meldrum, and Julia (Matt) Nelson; his grandchildren: Kaitlin, Brock, Ella, and Lucie Ellis; Mitchell, Faye, Nixon, Jay, and Clark Meldrum; and Covington, Finn, Nayvie, Brooks, and Merrill Nelson. He is also survived by his mother, Shirley Meldrum, and siblings: Jay (Jody) Meldrum, Mark Meldrum, Kristine (Mike) Condie, and Wendy (Steve) Connors. He is preceded in death by his father, Dallas Meldrum, and his grandparents.
