Michael Dee Porter

Michael Dee Porter passed away at home in Layton, Utah on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at age 65. He is survived by wife Mary Lyn Ossmen Porter, son Jeff Porter, daughter Alicia Porter Smith (husband Jeremiah), father Kenneth Roger Porter, sister Cheri Gleason (husband Timothy), brother Steve Porter (wife Kathe), and many nieces and nephews. Mike is preceded in death by his brother Kent Porter and mother Dorothy Streeter Porter.

Mike was born to Kenneth Roger Porter and Dorothy Piepgrass Streeter on April 18, 1944 in Clearfield, Utah. He married Mary Lyn Ossmen on May 15, 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were later sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

Mike''s life was marked by a spirit of service and compassion. He joined for the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1968. He served in Communications for twenty years, achieving the rank of Major. The U.S. Air Force stationed him around the world -- notably Alaska, Hawaii, England, Mississippi, Florida, Arizona, California and Utah. After military retirement in 1988, Mike built his family a house in Layton, Utah. He continued to work as a financial consultant, tax advisor, and insurance salesman. Mike served various callings within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, such as Ward Clerk, Cub Scout Cub Master and Primary teacher.

In his spare time, Mike loved to ski, play tennis, hike, travel, golf, and garden. He gave tennis lessons on his home''s tennis court. Neighborhood children would knock on the door to ask, "Can Mr. Porter come out to play?" He treasured the family''s Bear Lake cabin as a travel destination. There, he and his family and friends enjoyed many summers together jet skiing, boating, swimming, barbequing, and toasting marshmallows. Mike camped, hiked and skied throughout the natural wonders of Utah and Europe. His favorite activity was spending time with family.

Mike bravely faced a seven-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig''s Disease). The family would like to extend the deepest gratitude to everyone who offered assistance in their time of need. Family, friends, neighbors, and care-givers provided much joy and relief in difficult circumstances.

A memorial donation to the ALS Association www.alsa.org would be appreciated.

Family will greet friends Wednesday, June 17, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.
