Michael D. Rivers

December 4, 1952 — January 16, 2025

“The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it”.

Michael D. Rivers, born December 4,1952, son of Andrew and Sylvia Rivers, brother to Linda, Carol, Marc, and Vicki. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan attending the local schools and went on to complete various scholastic degrees.

Mike never stopped educating himself and was a Design Engineer. He lived in New York and California before making his way to Utah. Mike told stories of his youth and visiting family in North Carolina. He told of his mother and sisters candy making at the holidays and shared their wares throughout the years. He was proud of his family and ancestry.

Married to Maria G. Rivers on October 1,2004, he inherited two daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie (Shane) and Monica (Travis). Grandpa Mike as he was lovingly remembered by grandkids, Hunter, Dylan, Maxim, Breckyn, Sloan and Maecyn; great-grandchildren, Ledger and Lincoln. He never missed an opportunity to support them in their activities. And let’s not forget “The Boys”, his loyal companions, Marley and Elliott. Mike worked at L3 Communications in Simi Valley and then in SLC before he retired in March 2024.

He spent his spare time reading about the stars and could be found star gazing with his different telescopes. He was a learned man, always willing to share knowledge with those interested. He was a voracious reader and believer of science. He was a leader with the Utah chapter of Atheists.

He was a great listener and observant of others. He liked a good meal and drink. He and Maria hosted many family gatherings with him at the grill. One of his specialties was his “Special Chicken”. Unbeknownst to the grandkids, the chicken was actually salmon. We never could grill it like Grandpa; his was the best. Mike never hesitated to help those around him. While he was a quiet and observant man, he had a heart unlike others. Always willing to share his home and good fortune. If Mike saw someone he could help, he did.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and his two sisters.

It is said you never really know someone until you speak with those that choose to be around them. Friends of his who have reached out speak highly of Mike’s intelligence, acceptance of others and his sense of humor.

Mike dealt with his health challenges with a quiet strength. He wasn’t one to complain and always had a positive spin when asked how he was doing. He wanted to be well enough to visit his mother one more time. He didn’t get to do that as she recently passed.

He is now with his parents and sisters, without pain and in peace. We had asked Mike what he wanted, he said, “to be home surrounded by his family”. We made sure to honor his request. Mike passed peacefully surrounded by those who loved him fiercely.

Thank you for the friendship and care from Dr. Michael Nielsen and team and Atlas Home Health and Hospice for their care and guidance. Also, to his care team at McKay Dee Hospital.

At Mike’s request, a small remembrance of his life will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 11 a.m. at 2565 West 3300 North, Farr West, UT.

A family Celebration of Life will be held in Michigan this summer.

If you want to honor Mike, share time with your family, donate to a local Astronomy group or to the local animal shelter.

“No one is dumb who is curious. The people who don’t ask questions remain clueless throughout their lives”.
