Mirta Vaz

April 12, 1933 — January 16, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mirta Vaz on January 16, 2025, at age 91. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, Mirta left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love and presence of her family. Her life was a testament to kindness, grace, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Mirta devoted her life to her family and faith, leaving a legacy of love and steadfast dedication to God. Born on April 12, 1933, in Montevideo, Uruguay, she married Ruben Antonio Núñez in 1952 at age 19. She received her two greatest treasures from the marriage: her son Alberto and her daughter Zulma. As a mother, she was a beacon of wisdom and comfort, always ready to nurture and help her children. She moved from Uruguay to the United States when her children were adults. Initially, she lived in Greenwich, Connecticut, and West Palm Beach, Florida. Eventually, she moved in with her daughter Zulma and son-in-law Walter. Together, they lived in several locations, including Ecuador, Salt Lake City, Bogotá (Colombia), Lima (Peru), Recife (Brazil), West Jordan, Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), and finally, Centerville, Utah.

Mirta enjoyed painting, singing, dancing, cooking, and hosting. Her beautiful voice resonated, singing while cooking and doing household chores. Preparing meals for the missionaries brought her joy. At her core, she was sociable and always sought to serve others. She rarely spent money on herself, choosing instead to buy things for others, particularly her grandchildren, and she did so with an upbeat attitude. Known for her strength and resilience, she inspired everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Mirta had a firm belief in God. In 2004, at age 71, she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bogota, where she served as a service missionary. About a year later, she was endowed in the Recife Temple and served as a worker as well in another temple. She also served as a Sunday School teacher and Relief Society Secretary.

She is survived by her daughter, Zulma; grandchildren Gabriel, Daiana, David, Polo, and Michel; and great-grandchildren Nicholas, Vanessa, Belen, Isabella, Noemi, Esteban, Andrea, Celeste, Lucas, and Jhonatan. Her nephew Oscar had a special place in her heart. They look forward to the promised day when they might see her again.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at 11:00am Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. where friends may visit family Friday, January 24th from 6-8 pm and Saturday.
