She was born December 4, 1922 in Salt Lake City a daughter of Willis and Norma Nichols Smith. Mona attended the Ogden City Schools graduating from Ogden High School in the class of 1940.
She married Jarvis Palmer in 1941 and from that marriage came two sons, Danny and Larry. They were later divorced. She married Louis J. Hanley on March 24, 1958. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. From that marriage came two sons, Pat and Mike. Louis preceded her in death on April 9, 1987.
Mona had a successful career with the civil service, beginning at Utah General Depot, later known as Defense Depot Ogden, and later transferring to the Internal Revenue Service where she retired in 1978 following 35 years of service. She made many friends and enjoyed her relationships with the people she associated with during her career.
Mona was a sweet spirit who touched everyone that knew her in a profound way. She was a source of inspiration and generous beyond reason. She was a ray of sunshine and was loved by all who knew her. Mona was a friend for life. Her biggest joy was her family: her sons, their wives and her grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan and loved making suckers for her grandchildren. She had a unique sense of humor, one that made others feel better about things and themselves. The best part was her ability to laugh at herself.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings throughout her life. She served a two year mission as a tour guide at the Ogden Tabernacle. She loved temple work and had deep and abiding faith. She had a beautiful alto voice, and loved to sing, especially the church hymns.
