Monte D. Bailey

Monte D Bailey, coach, teacher and friend of many, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2013 in Ogden at the venerable age of 96. Monte was born on March 26, 1917 to Chloe and Gilbert Bailey in Moroni, Utah. He attended Juab High School in Nephi, Utah, and later graduated from Utah State University where he was captain of the tennis team and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

He married Marjorie Jackson in 1938 and they had four daughters, Linda Beynon, Nancy Oyler, Clela Salvo, and Karen Mooney. His wife Marjorie, his daughter Clela, and his grandson Todd Schumacher preceded him in death. He leaves behind six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews who were always dear to his heart.

Monte began his career as a teacher and coach in Rockland, Idaho. He then taught at Cedar City High School until he was called to military duty in World War II. Following the war, Monte and Marge moved to Ogden where he began his long career as a coach and a teacher at both Ogden and Ben Lomond High Schools. During the summers, Monte was active in city recreation programs, most notably Ogden''s tennis program. Following his retirement, he perfected his golf game. Monte was well known for his love of all sports and personally excelled at basketball, baseball, and tennis. He was an avid participant and supporter of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame, an organization that recognizes the excellence of Utah''s athletes and coaches. He served his community as a Utah State Senator and Weber County Commissioner.

A Memorial Service celebrating Monte''s life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund at utahsportshalloffame.org.
