Murray Thomas Self
September 3, 1922 – October 17, 2014
Murray Thomas Self, 92, passed away of natural causes. Murray was born in Dale County, Alabama to George and Irene Self. He was raised with his two brothers, Lewie and Harold in the small farming community of Clayhatchee. As a youngster, he helped the family farm peanuts and cotton. This early exposure eventually became a lifelong hobby. Murray joined the U.S. Army in 1942. As part of the 10 th Armored Division, 55 th Armored Engineers, he served under General George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. Among other honors, he was decorated with the WWII Victory Medal and three Bronze Stars. On April 5, 1952, Murray married Betty Davis, the love of his life. They raised two sons; Mike and Steve. Following 30 years in the auto body and paint business he worked as a sheetmetal mechanic at Hill Air Force Base, retiring in 1987. Murray was one of the founding members of Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton where he and Betty dedicated much of their time. He served for many years as Head Usher, on the grounds committee and volunteered generously on many, many occasions. An avid gardener most of his life, he also followed the Atlanta Braves, enjoyed playing a little “Hold’em” and loved Alabama Football, (ROLL TIDE!) After nearly 60 years of marriage, Betty passed away in January 2012. Murray is survived by his sons, Michael (Trish), Goodyear, AZ; and Steven (Susan), Clinton; brother Lewie, Atlantic Beach, FL; and three granddaughters, Jennifer, Charlotte and Laurel.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living, Chancellor Gardens Assisted Living; Rodney, IHC Hospice, Vicki, Machelle, and his “Hold’em” buddies all of whom generously shared their love and care with Murray.
