Myrtle LaVon Grey
November 18, 1922 - May 26, 2012
Myrtle LaVon Neilson was born in Pioche, Nevada, November 18, 1922, to James Andrew and Hazel Adell Lee Neilson, of Panaca, Nevada. She passed away in Ogden, Utah, May 26, 2012. LaVon grew up in Panaca, attending elementary school and Lincoln Country High. She had said she grew up somewhat shy, but she overcame it, and enjoyed talking with strangers in the stores as though she already knew them. She enjoyed the folks who lived in the assisted living with her, always wanting to be of assistance to them, even though she herself had difficulties.
LaVon met Melvin Grey, of Brazil, Indiana, in 1938, in Panaca, where they married September 4, 1939, and were married 71 years when he passed away in 2011. LaVon lived in Georgia and Indiana for two years while Melvin served in the Army during WWII. They had lived mainly in Panaca; Moab, UT, 40 years; and the last 7 years in Ogden, Utah.
She played softball as a teenager and always supported and watched Melvin as he played on town teams. She had made the comment with a smile just a few months ago, as her body had aged and worn out, "Can you believe I used to play ball"? She was a true artist in needlecraft, completing numerous bedspreads, tablecloths, toys, clothes, pictures, needlepoint, cross-stitch, quilts, and embroidery. She was a great cook, and handed down recipes, much to the enjoyment of family, including her famous boiled raisin cake.
Mom is survived by her children, Bonnie Jean (husband Alvin aka Pete, deceased) Foremaster, Plain City, Utah; Carolyn Grey, Las Vegas, Nevada; Melvin Leslie (Ellen) Grey, Plain City, Utah; and Debra Ann Grey, Aurora, Colorado; 16 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
She absolutely loved having her family visit her! Her siblings are Jimmy (Lola) Neilson, Pahrump, Nevada; Lola (Booth) Turnbeaugh both deceased, Washington, Utah; Wanda (Bob) McCroskey, Panaca, Nevada; Donald aka Bus (Maranee) Neilson, Las Vegas, Nevada; Mary (Larry) Carson, Salt Lake City, Utah; Peggy (Tom) Rowe, Caliente, Nevada.
Services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Panaca LDS Chapel. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Interment, Panaca Cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary.
