Myrtle R. Smith
WASHINGTON TERRACE - Our precious and darling mother, Myrtle Easton Rollins Smith, of Washington Terrace and Riverdale, passed away peacefully and quietly on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 following a short illness. She was 90 years old. Every moment of her life was spent loving her children and her family. She loved being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Myrtle was born September 2, 1918 in Evanston, Wyoming, the first of six children born to George Leon and Margaret Viola Easton Rollins. She grew up in Lyman on the family farm located on the lower bench.
Myrtle married Claude Smith on December 15, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived all of their married life of 54 years in a home they built together in Evanston. Claude passed away in January 1993, and Mom has missed our father all of those 16 years. She moved to Ogden to be close to her children and she enjoyed her new home there.
Myrtle and Claude’s nine children are: Louise Behnert, Tremonton; Melvin (Renita) Smith, Ogden; Janet (John) Carlton, Las Vegas, NV; Diane Earnshaw, Ogden; Dorothy (Leonard) Pitts, Lyman, WY; David (Alice) Smith, Ogden; Eileen (Melvin) Hale, Star Valley, WY; Robert (Glenda) Smith, Layton; and Carol (Michael) Guymon, Washington Terrace. Their lives were also blessed with 42 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Myrtle was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served at both the ward and stake level in many callings. She served in the Ogden Temple for 11 years and served a mission to Southern Utah with her husband.
She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was a 4-H Leader for over 35 years and taught her last baking classes at the age of 75 after she moved to Ogden. She wrote three songs and an abundance of poetry. Her poems were often used in lessons, or for Mother and Father’s day with the treat. Her last poem was written at the age of 90.
She loved raising her family, baking, writing poetry and music, singing, teaching 4-H and Cub Scouts, quilting, genealogy, camping, traveling, family reunions, all sorts of games and puzzles and treasured all of her grandchildren. Myrtle will always be remembered for her loving patience, her wonderful and sweet personality, her commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and her deep devotion to her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, but we are rejoicing with her now as she is with her beloved husband and family members that have gone before her.
Her youngest sister, Beth Hansen, lives in Evanston, Wyoming.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her brothers, Wayne, Vernal and Floyd Rollins, and her sister, Carma Corbridge.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Washington Terrace 5th Ward Chapel, 350 West 5100 South, with Bishop Wayne Funk officiating.
