Naomi Hughes
Naomi Hughes, beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt and champion of orphaned animals, died in her sleep peacefully Friday morning at McKay-Dee Hospital under hospice care. Known as Sister, or Sis, by family and friends, she is lovingly remembered for her irresistible wit, sweetness and generosity, as well as her passion for living.
Sis was born in Salt Lake City in 1923 and grew up in Ogden and Southern California. Married to Wayne Wardly in 1940 in Yuma, Arizona, she worked for many years at Read Brothers in Ogden.
Most important to her were times working with her daughter and horses, an Arabian named K.C. and Aztec, a Fox Trotter, along with her dog Snowman. She belonged to several animal charities and her devotion to animals included stopping traffic to escort stray turtles, ducks, dogs, birds, and cats across the road. An avid golfer who belonged to the Women’s Golf Club and once nailed a hole in one, Sis loved playing with her dear friends Mary and Rio. Other passions included attending to neighbors in need, dancing, singing, and appearing as an extra in the film The Great Gatsby..
Sis is survived by her husband of 25 years, Bill Hughes, daughter Patricia Ann Wagner, sisters Leona Hagensen and Betty White, and numerous adoring nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lincoln and Naomi White and two brothers, Lynde and Lincoln White Jr.
It is with gratitude that those who knew and loved Sis received the grace of her unconditional and transcendent love, a gift forever embedded in our hearts. Now reunited with her beloved Eskie and rejoicing angels, her infectious smile and laugh will be missed. Upon her wishes a private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.
