Nelda Jones
October 24, 1917 ~ September 11, 2015
Nelda Van Orden Pogue Jones left her mortal life on September 11, 2015 at her home in Ogden, Utah. She left peacefully knowing she had lived a good and rich life having served her children and Father in Heaven well.
Nelda was born on October 24, 1917, at her home in Lewiston, Utah, the daughter of Abner and Agnes McKnight Van Orden. She attended elementary school in Lewiston and North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah, where she excelled scholastically at both schools. She went on to attend the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. She was the lead secretary in the 1937 Utah State Legislature, after which, she held many supervisory positions in the Business World in Utah, California, Texas, and Georgia.
Nelda married Woodrow L. Pogue on August 5, 1944 in Fresno, California. They had two children, Kathleene and Allen. Nelda and Woodrow were later divorced. Nelda was a single mother for many years and along with raising her two children alone, she took her niece Joan Van Orden at age four and raised her as her own daughter.
Nelda married Rudger E. Jones on December 28, 1968 in Ogden, Utah. This marriage was solemnized one year later in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. With Nelda’s marriage to Rudger came three step-daughters, Carolyn, Susan, and Allison. Nelda and Rudger traveled extensively. They worked together, played together, and prayed together, both being life long active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were missionaries together from 1984 to 1986 in the Switzerland Temple.
Nelda will be remembered as a hard worker, both in her professional life and in having an immaculate and loving home for her family. Many people have been the recipient of Nelda’s creativity, her writings, ceramic paintings, embroidery work, and her lovely dinner parties.
Nelda is survived by her children, Allen W. Pogue, Ogden, UT, Kathy (Gary) Chugg, Riverdale, UT; niece, Joan (Bill) Conrad, Tremonton, UT; step-daughters, Carolyn Hughes, Salt Lake City, UT, Susan Jones, Redwood City, CA, Allison (Paul) Sprague, Salt Lake City, UT; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, John Van Orden (brother to Joan).
