Nolan J. Kartchner
Dec. 5, 1928 — May 15, 2018
Nolan J. Kartchner, age 89, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 15, 2018 while residing at Mount Ogden nursing home and under the care of Independence Hospice for the past year. Nolan was born on December 5, 1928 in Lewiston, Utah to Alvin Ernest and LuRea E. (Sharp) Kartchner. He was the fifth of six children. After graduating high school he joined the United States Air Force and served in Guam. When he finished his duty he was discharged as a Staff Sergeant and returned home and married his first wife, Gloria D. Opheikens. They raised their six children and shared 32 wonderful years before Gloria passed away. Nolan later married Karen (Shaw) Weaver and spent the next 25 years helping raise her four children before she, too passed away.
Nolan was a very hard worker and always said, “If you don’t know how to do something, pretend like you do, until you pick it up.” He worked as a heavy duty mechanic, electrician, and handyman. He was a man of all trades and even in his retired years worked in maintenance for the condos he lived in. His main career was as a Brakeman for Union Pacific Railroad, where he started in 1953. Nolan was a good-natured man who enjoyed life and laughing. He enjoyed fishing and camping, but more than anything he enjoyed being with his friends and family.
Nolan is survived by his children, Kathy (Daniel) Pa’a Aina, Becky (Jerry) Austin, Randy (Karen) Kartchner, Tracey Kartchner, and Shanna (Mark) Hansen. Nolan was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
