1921-2016
Noriko Maxine Furubayashi, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, July 25, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although she will be missed dearly by all of us, we take comfort remembering a life well lived.
Maxine was born on June 13, 1921 in Los Angeles, California the daughter of Kiyoshi Hirano and Kazuyo Sugimoto. She graduated from Kyoto Women’s College in Japan. On December 19, 1950, Maxine married Masato Jack Furubayashi in Salt Lake City. Masato passed away in 2003.
Maxine was an active member of the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and the Buddhist Women’s Association. In her youth, Maxine was a talented odori dancer and later brought her knowledge and skills to Salt Lake City to teach Temple members to dance for Salt Lake’s first Obon Festival, a time to remember and dance with our ancestors. Dressed in her traditional yukata, Maxine continued to instruct and dance in the Salt Lake and Ogden Obon Festivals for over 60 years.
Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family and taking trips to Wendover, Las Vegas and visiting her sister’s family in California. She also enjoyed playing hana, a Japanese card game, with her friends.
Maxine is survived by her daughter Sandy (Paul) Iwasaki, son Mike (Connie), son Scott (Joy), daughter-in-law Susan; grandchildren Michael and Emily Iwasaki, Candice, Krista, Sydney, Shelby and Garrett Furubayashi; sister Jean (Daniel) Ikemoto and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, son Glen and brother Henry Hirano.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 West 100 South, where friends may visit the family from 10:00-10:45am prior to services. A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm, Monday, August 1st, at the Temple.
