Norma Amano

Norma Hamatake Amano, 84, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2014 in Layton, Utah at the Legacy Village of Layton.  Norma was born on April 3,1930 in Sacramento, California to Ichiro and Shigeko Morikawa Hamatake as the second of four children.

Norma grew up in Sacramento until she was 12 years old when the U.S. entered into WWII.  She and the Hamatake family were relocated from Sacramento to the Tule Lake, CA internment camp in 1942.  They were eventually moved to other camps at Jerome, Arkansas and Gila River, Arizona.  When the war ended the family moved to Tooele, Utah where Norma attended school and graduated from Tooele High School class of 1948.  She continued her education going on to graduate in 1951 from the LDS Hospital School of Nursing in Salt Lake City.  Later that year on December 16, 1951 she married Joe Amano in Salt Lake City.

Norma and Joe moved from Salt Lake City to Minneapolis, Minnesota as Joe completed his medical internship then moved to Ogden, Utah while Joe completed his Residency at the Dee Memorial Hospital.  In 1957 Norma and Joe made their home in Clearfield, Utah.  Joe passed away on July 29, 1983.  Norma has resided at the Legacy Village of Layton for the past 3 years.

Norma worked as a Registered Nurse while Joe finished Medical School.   She was a member of women’s medical auxiliaries in Weber and Davis Counties.  She was a dedicated wife and mother with a tremendous love for her family especially her five grandchildren.

She is survived by sons: Joe Jr. (Tracy) Amano of Layton and Alan (Julie) Amano of Sandy; Grandchildren: Derek, Alyssa, Kaden, Natalie and Alex.  She is also survived by a brother Richard Kenji (Jean) Hamatake of Tooele along with many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister Lois Hamatake Tom and a brother Robert Hamatake

The family expresses special thanks to the staff at the Legacy Village of Layton for their care.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday December 6, 2014 at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road where friends may meet Friday December 5, , 2014 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 to 10:45 a.m.

Internment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park in Ogden, Utah.
