Norma Buhler Preece Nelson passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at the age of 96 from conditions incident to age. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all.
Norma was born on May 19, 1922 in Kaysville, Utah, the daughter of Walter and Wilma Witt Buhler, the 2nd of six children. She married Joseph F. (Joe) Preece, July 26, 1946 in Kaysville. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Joe passed away March 26, 1991. On July 29, 1995, she married LaVance P. Nelson in Bountiful, Utah. He passed away on May 19, 2013. She graduated from Davis High School in 1940. She worked as a telephone operator for Mountain States Telephone Co. in Kaysville for 3 years, at the Ogden Arsenal and HAFB for 7 years and as a newspaper correspondent for the Weekly Reflex and Davis County Clipper for 31 years retiring in 1985.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many positions including Sunday School and Relief Society teacher, stake communications director and was a faithful visiting teacher until age 94. She and Joe served a stake mission. Norma was a Temple Ordinance worker in the Ogden and Bountiful LDS Temples for many years. She loved Family History and spent countless hours researching her ancestors and faithfully wrote in her journal.
She was active in the community and served as executive secretary for the Kaysville Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the Kaysville Civic Association, co chairman of the Kaysville City Centennial committee. She received several community awards including: Outstanding Service Award Kaysville Jaycees 1972; Outstanding Contributor Davis High School 1979; Distinguished Service Award Kaysville Arts Council 1981; Distinguished Service Award 1985; Citizen of the Year Kaysville 1985; Total Citizen Award Utah Chamber of Commerce 1988; Unsung Hero Award City of Kaysville 1994. She was listed in both publications of “Who’s Who is America” and “Who’s Who in the West.”
She enjoyed her association with the women of the Athena Club and the Fine Arts Club in Kaysville. Her hobbies included reading, needlework, gardening, golf and traveling.
Her family and her friends were her wealth. She spent a lifetime in service to others. She did not have to be asked, she just did it. She will be greatly missed but she left a rich heritage of love, service and wonderful memories.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Joe and LaVance, her brothers, Russell, Doyle, Glenn and Verle, her sister, Doris, and stepdaughters Janet Nelson Marston and Diane Nelson Barrus. She is survived by her two children, Terry Preece, (Debbie) and Shannette Keeler (Paul); her five stepchildren, Paul Nelson (Carolyn), Carolyn Hyatt (Doug), Lee Barrus (Patricia), Sue Kiisel (Ty), Mike Marston (Annette); 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main. Friends may visit family on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
