Oertel Hadley Hansen

February 17, 1919 ~ February 16, 2017

Oertel Hansen passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, a day before her 98th birthday, with her family around her.

She was born February 17, 1919 in Taylor, Utah to Hyrum and Sarah Ellen Hadley. Her sister, who turned 15 years old that day, helped deliver her and became a very scared assistant midwife and nurse all at once. But she received a baby sister for her birthday.

Oertel attended Weber County schools, graduating from Weber High School in 1937. She attended college at Weber State, BYU, and Utah State, graduating in Education with a Bachelor and Master’s Degree. She began teaching in the fall of 1940 in Fort Duchesne, Utah and further years she taught Special Education in the Weber School District in Ogden, Utah.

She met Myrlin Hansen at an Institute activity. On June 25, 1941, Oertel married Myrlin in the Manti LDS Temple.

In 1949, they built their home in Taylor (Ogden), Utah. After 8 years of marriage they had their first son, Craig and 2 ½ years later they were blessed with another son, Dwayne.

Oertel loved her family, enjoyed music, and teaching school. She also worked hard on their farm throughout many years.

In her later years, Oertel was diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Myrlin said, “You can’t die. I can’t live without you”. As it turned out, he never had to, as he passed away before her.

Oertel was active in the LDS Church. She held various Church positions and worked for 17 years on the Weber North Stake Board.

One of Oertel’s favorite past times was serving others. She grew a garden every year and shared it with many. In her late years and throughout 2016, she could be seen delivering cantaloupes to everyone around Taylor. She could not stand anything going to waste.

Oertel is survived by her sons, Craig (Betsy) Hansen, Lapoint, UT; Dwayne (Jenann) Hansen, Ogden; six grandchildren who she loved very much, Kasey (Amy) Hansen, Holli (Ryan) Cooper, Mara (Jim) Brown, Jordan (Kara) Hansen, Calli (Robert) Nyholm, Scott (Mischa)Hansen; and seven great-grandchildren, with another two on the way. She enjoyed watching them all at many birthday and holiday parties.

Grandma Hansen always told each of them two things…”Luv ya” and “Be happy”.

The family wishes to thank a special niece, Ann Christensen and Ryan and Tiffany from IHC Hospice for their exceptional compassion and care of our mother.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday February 24, 2017 at the Ogden West Stake Center, 2200 South 4300 West. The family will meet with friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, West Weber Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Primary Children’s Hospital.
