Patricia Ann Klucken Hill
A Life Well Lived!
Pat came into this world on November 11, 1928, to loving parents, Ralph F. and Ottillia Klucken. Her parents were city folks who had moved from Washington, D.C. to Maine because of her father’s health. Her brother Ralph A. was eight years older, and they were good friends all through the years.
They lived in the tiny village of East Stoneham, Maine on a 1200-acre farm that her father managed. They even had a private lake and ski hills. She loved the farm and spent much of her childhood outdoors with her many cats and her two dogs, in what is now the White Mountains National Forest. She had a very happy childhood.
She went to a two-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and played with some of the children in the area. During WWII Pat took turns watching for enemy planes in the spotter shack on the land -luckily, they never saw any. During the summers, starting when she was 14, she would waitress at some of the Lake Resorts nearby.
She went to Bridgeton Academy for High School. It was a private boarding school but the local kids in the area got to attend, but did not live there. She was very involved in school activities like plays, ping pong, basketball, debate and more.
The Fall after she graduated, Pat went off to Boston to study at an Art School. Later she went to Burdett Business College. After Burdett she worked in offices and eventually started working for a doctor at Harvard, as his Medical Assistant.
During this time Pat was taking the LDS Missionary discussions. Her brother had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and introduced her to the missionaries. She joined the church in 1952 and was attending the Cambridge Branch in Massachusetts. She loved the gospel, and it was always an important part of her life.
Five months later, as she was walking down the stairs at church Pat met a young man named Cal Edsel Hill from the small town of Lordsburg, New Mexico. A year later they were married in the mission home because the closest temple was in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Cal graduated from Harvard Business School, and the family moved to New Mexico where their first son, Randy, was born in 1954. Their family was sealed for time and all eternity in the Phoenix, Arizona LDS Temple in 1955. Tucson, Arizona was their next stop in 1956 and Greg was born soon after. Then off to California where Jeff joined the family in 1959. Cal started working for Pet Milk, Inc and they moved to Florissant, Missouri where their last child, Lori was born.
They had a good life and were very active in Church and school activities, service, and sports. In 1965 Pat’s mother, Tillie, came to live with their family. What a blessing that became.
Pat and the children lost Cal to cancer in 1968, when she was 40 years old. Then the adventure of raising their children without him began. They were ages 5 to 14. She moved the family to Bountiful, Utah in 1969 to be near family. Many family members helped throughout the years.
As a single mom she was awesome. Her sense of humor and love of her family and the Lord helped her survive the hard times throughout the years. She was loved by her children and her children’s friends. She was very involved in church and the kids’ lives. She never dated or had a desire to remarry because, as she said, “I’m already married.” She was a devoted mother and taught her children well.
Pat had to start working to support the family and eventually became a dental assistant for Dr. Max Conley in Bountiful. She worked there for many years with Max and Carma Karren who both became her good friends.
Pat and her mother, Tillie, spent many hours and years doing genealogy and family history work, which they loved. She taught her children to laugh and love and appreciate their ancestors.
Pat was one of those people who never said a bad word about anyone and if someone else did she would point out the good in them. She loved animals and nature, sunsets, cute picture books, reading, gardening, pretty dishes and her rock garden. She appreciated the little things and wonders of the world, even worms.
In 1980 Pat’s oldest son, Randy, passed away. This was another very hard loss in their lives.
When she sold her house, she lived in an apartment and eventually was able to move into an apartment in Greg and Shelley Hill’s house and lived there for many years.
After she retired Pat was able to work at the LDS temple in Bountiful, continued her genealogy work and enjoying her grandchildren. She loved her family past and present with all her heart and was able to help hundreds of her ancestors receive their temple work.
She was a wonderful “Grammy” to her 14 grandchildren and 23 (and counting) great grandchildren. She loved to be with them doing fun things like: the Creepy Crawly Cousins Club the 'CCC Club" where they explored nature, sleepovers, reading books, playing games, watching movies, eating popcorn (even when it was burned) just talking and the wonderful Christmas memories -the Christmas story and the “String Party”. So many good times.
As Pat grew older and needed more care, she was able to live with all her children at different times. Through the good and bad times Pat always had a positive attitude and made the best of things. She would joke around, even in the hospital. Her caregivers loved her, and she loved them!
On July 27, 2021, at the age of 92, Pat was able to peacefully leave this earth to join her husband, son, and many other family members in Heaven. She had a life well lived, a family she cherished, and her knowledge of Christ. She will be missed but we are so happy at the thought of the joyous reunion she’s having.
Thank you to all the family and friends who have loved her and whom she has loved.
We want to thank all the CNAs at Heritage Place/TruWood, nurses and others, who gave her loving care. We appreciate all they did for her.
Love you Mom, Grammy and Friend!
Pat is survived by her children and their spouses: Greg & Shelley Hill, Jeff & Cristy Hill, Jeff & Lori Thorpe. Also, by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her Husband, Cal Edsel Hill, her son Randall K Hill, her parents, Ralph & Ottillia Klucken and her brother Ralph.
