Paul Eugene Newey

Paul Eugene Newey, 74, passed away Saturday August 1, 2009 from a heart attack with his devoted wife at his side. Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle was born in Ogden Utah, October 3, 1934. He was raised in Ogden in what he called the best neighborhood in the world where he was surrounded by great friends and loving parents. He attended Ogden High School, "for the two days I went" and ultimately received his diploma through Weber District Adult High School. He was an ardent patriot serving in the Army during the Korean War where he always said "they ended the war because they heard I was comin." In 1959 he met the love of his life in Elaine Garfield whom he affectionately called "Ruby". They were married in 1960 in Ogden, Utah and sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 29th, 1963. They established their home in Roy and raised six children. For sixteen years, Paul owned and operated Mattie''s CafAC. in Roy. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a tireless member of the Lakeview Ward where he once served as Bishop. He was generous in his time and attention to everyone. He lived the gospel in action and served with watchful attention to the elderly, the widowed and the youth. He spent selfless decades coaching, guiding and inspiring young men in his community. Paul loved the outdoors and spent countless hours building memories with his family hunting, fishing and camping. He was a determined worker and perfectly reliable. His strength and courage were never-ending and he will forever be remembered best as an honest man among men. Paul is an amazing man and devoted husband and father. He is a gentle and loving grandfather and mentor to people from all walks of life and always rooted for the underdog. He was a permanent fixture at his children''s and grandchildren''s activities; you could always count on "Paul-E." Paul is survived by his wife Elaine Garfield; daughters Lisa Ann Lassetter, Jennifer Harrop (Brett) and Nicole Elaine Park (Shawn); sons Reid Paul (Susan), Mark Lee (Cami) and Samuel Eugene (Natalie) and twenty grandchildren; sisters Doris Hess (Floyd), Nancy Paulsen (Roy) and brother Max Newey. He is preceded in death by a daughter Paula Elaine (stillborn) and his parents Florence and Eugene Newey. The family wishes to express particular gratitude for the compassion and service of Dr. Justin Mansfield. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6th at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeview Ward Chapel, 4900 South 2000 West, Roy. Friends may call Wednesday, August 5th from 6 to 8 p.m.at Lindquist''s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and on Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Roy City Cemetery.
