Paul V. Skeen
OGDEN – Paul Valentine Skeen, 65, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at Mt. Ogden Health and Rehab in Washington Terrace.
He was born August 7, 1944 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, a son of Paul Ellison and Thelma Valentine Skeen. He attended Ogden High School and Weber State College and served an LDS Mission to North Germany.
Paul married his eternal companion and sweetheart, Karen Ochs, on August 29, 1970.
Paul was a true patriot whose love for country, state and community were unrivaled. This love was demonstrated by countless hours of service to the Republican Party on a local (30 years as legislative district chair), state (40 years as a state delegate) and national level (twice a national delegate). His dedicated service to the Weber County Fire Board was among his proudest accomplishments. He was truly honored to be associated with the brave men and women of the Weber Fire District. Additionally, Paul served on the Weber County Executive Committee and the Uintah Highlands Water and Sewer District Board.
Scouting was one of Paul’s great loves. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award after serving in leadership positions for over 40 years. More important to him than the award were the countless number of leaders that he helped train and the hundreds of boys that can say they earned their Eagle because of Paul Skeen.
He coached numerous youth teams totaling over 30 years as a coach. Like in scouting, he went the extra mile to help each boy or girl taste success and feel good about themselves. Numerous county championships helped.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and passed that love on to his children and grandchildren. He treasured the special friendships he developed with his hunting buddies. Two things were certain when hunting with Paul. First, you would not go hungry, and second, you would return with a good story. His personal hunting highlight took place last fall when he was able to fulfill his dream of harvesting a trophy bull elk.
He is survived by his wife Karen; his children, Paul (Dora) Skeen, South Weber; Shannon (Willis) Mickles, Ogden; Travis (Cassie) Skeen, Washington Terrace; Tyson (Natalie) Skeen, Provo; eleven and one-half grandchildren; and his sisters, Carolyn (Blaine) Gardner, Bountiful; Barbara Skeen, Ogden.
Paul was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother.
