Percy George Bateman, of Clearfield died on Friday, August 21, 2009 at Davis Hospital. He was born in Evanston, Wyoming on January 14, 1925 the son of James Alonzo Bateman and Gladys Alma Matthews.

On March 30, 1942 he married Maevon Bingham in Malad, Idaho and on their 18th wedding anniversary March 30, 1960 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 67 years and had eight children: Douglas (Doris) Bateman, Barbara (Roy) Reed, Sandra (Randy) Miles, David Bateman, Debra (Gordon) Belflower, Daren (Joyce) Bateman, twins Barry (Charity) Bateman and Darlene (Kevin) Van Vleet. He has 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his immediate family as well as two younger brothers Dennis (Hilda) Bateman and Keith Bateman, as well as his sister-in-law Lila Bingham. His parents have preceded him in death as well as his beloved brother Gleelyn Bateman and sister-in-law Edna Rex Bateman, his only brother-in-law Kenneth Bingham, and his parents-in-law, David Moroni Bingham and Florence Norris Bingham.

Percy served in World War II in the US Navy on the USS Tangier (the ship that had been the first to fire on the Japanese at Pearl Harbor) and later in the Korean Conflict. He started his civilian career as a packer at the Navy Base and ended it as the section chief over five departments at the Defense Mapping Agency. He was dedicated to his top secret assignment to get maps out to every hot spot in the world. His passion was the outdoors and he loved fishing and hunting with his brother, Gleelyn, his sons, nephews, and friends. He was an avid salmon fisherman so most of his summers were spent in Idaho. He was a talented man who designed and sold many fishing lures and holds the patent for his fishing egg cure. He spent many years as the secretary-treasurer for the AFGE.

He was a member of the LDS Church where his favorite calling was that of Scoutmaster.

He will be honored on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank our loving mother for her 24 years of dedicated care of our father in his illness, our brother Dave for the last 11 years as a live in caretaker and his sons Ryan, who lived with the family before his marriage and son Curtis who currently has lived for years with our parents and been the strong arms to lift and care about our parents.
