Pete Van Vliet, age 79, passed away on May 15, 2024, in Ogden, Utah. Born on June 8, 1944, in Artesia, California, to Hugo and Effie (Buitelaar) Van Vliet, Pete was the oldest of five brothers.
Pete attended Ontario Christian School and later earned an associate degree from California Polytechnic State University. He went on to become the proud owner and operator of a successful apple orchard in Wilder, ID growing Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Criterion apples.
In 1973, Pete married the love of his life, Linda (Schmidt) Van Vliet at Chino Reformed Church in Chino, California. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters: Mieke (Van Vliet) Cordell, Sally (Van Vliet) Mullen (married to Eric Mullen), and Beth (Van Vliet) Demshar (married to Mark Demshar). Pete was a devoted Papa to Leentje (Mullen) Klingensmith (married to Luke Klingensmith), Cole Mullen, Kennedy Cordell, Paige Van Vliet, and Sebastian Demshar, and a loving Great-Papa to Wilhelmina Klingensmith.
A passionate fan of Boise State University football, Pete also enjoyed gardening, watching Jeopardy, camping, and traveling. He and Linda loved taking road trips through Canada, staying at charming bed and breakfasts, and embarking on cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, even enjoying a river cruise through the Netherlands into Belgium. Pete once drove from the West Coast to the East Coast of Canada, embracing his joy of adventure and exploration.
A dedicated member of Deer Flat Church for over 50 years, Pete's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was known for his deep love of family, a sense of humor that kept everyone laughing with his dry wit, and his passion for the outdoors. Pete's presence brought joy to those around him, whether he was sharing a laugh, spending time with his beloved dogs, or working in his garden.
Pete is survived by his brothers Gary Van Vliet, Rick Van Vliet, and his cherished family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Effie Van Vliet as well as brothers Red Van Vliet (2006) and Bill Van Vliet (1984).
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Wilder Cemetery with a reception to follow at Deer Flat Church. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
